Asheville and looking for a therapist to receive counseling?
Here you will find
information on an exciting, new development in the field
of psychology, it’s called Positive Psychology and it has
arrived in Asheville!
Positive Psychology – An Emerging
Field
Many people think that a person might go to see
a psychologist for counseling when something is “wrong.” This
belief is partly due to the path that the field of psychology
has followed. Before World War II, psychology had three goals.
These were to help cure mental illness, to make peoples lives
more fulfilling, and to nurture potential and talent. In 1945,
after World War II, to assist veterans of the war, money and
research turned primarily to treating mental illness.
Traditionally counseling focuses on topics such as decreasing
depression, relieving anxiety, eliminating phobias, and
soothing marital discord.
Today, under the guidance and leadership of
psychologists such as Martin Seligman, Mihaly Csikszentmihali,
Ed Diener and others, a new focus in psychology is emerging,
called Positive Psychology. The aim of Positive Psychology is
to research and then apply the systems and techniques that
allow individuals and communities to thrive.
Counseling today is no longer focused purely
what needs fixing in individuals, couples and families.
Positive Psychology can help Individuals,
Couples and Families to:
Move from “surviving” to “thriving”
Find ways to grow and have deeper and even richer life
experience after experiencing trauma
Enhance Passion
Nurture Creativity
Discover greater Meaning in ones life and activities
Sustain job satisfaction
Rekindle and Deepen loving relationships
